Why Weather Changes Trigger Migraines
(And What You Can Do About It)
Do you ever feel like you can predict the weather better than your local meteorologist?
For many people with migraines, a storm rolling in means one thing: pain is on the way. It’s so common that patients will tell me, “I can feel the pressure drop before the rain even starts.”
But the problem is that most doctors stop at acknowledging weather as a trigger.
They don’t explain why it happens or what you can actually do about it.
Let’s break it down.
Why Weather Affects Migraines
When the barometric pressure outside drops (like before a storm), your body has to adjust. That means shifts in blood flow, fluid dynamics, and neurological activity. For someone with a healthy and regulated system, this isn’t a big deal.
Because the body adapts.
But for migraine sufferers, especially those with a stressed or misaligned nervous system, that adaptation doesn’t happen smoothly. Instead, the pressure change becomes the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
The Science of Weather and Migraines
Here’s what’s actually going on:
1. CSF Dynamics – The cranio-cervical junction (where your skull meets the top of your spine) plays a huge role in regulating cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. A pressure drop outside your body changes the pressure gradient inside your body. If CSF flow is already restricted, this shift can create a kind of “traffic jam,” increasing intracranial pressure and sparking a migraine.
2. Venous Outflow – The veins that drain blood from your brain also pass through this region. If the junction is misaligned, venous drainage is impaired. A sudden weather-related pressure drop makes that bottleneck even worse, adding strain to the system.
3. Brainstem Sensitivity – The brainstem, housed right at the cranio-cervical junction, is like the master switchboard for pain and autonomic function. When pressure changes alter CSF and blood flow, an already sensitive brainstem can “tip over,” setting off the cascade that becomes a migraine.
This is why so many patients feel like “human barometers.”
They’re not imagining it.
Their body and nervous system really are reacting to subtle environmental shifts.
Why Some People Are More Sensitive
Not everyone gets migraines from storms. The difference often comes down to nervous system resilience.
If your nervous system is well-regulated and your upper cervical spine is stable, you can handle the stress of barometric changes. But if you’re already in a state of dysregulation or if the top of your neck is misaligned and disrupting fluid flow, your system can’t adapt.
That’s why two people can experience the exact same storm, but only one ends up in bed with the blinds shut, clutching their head.
A Better Way Forward
This is where my work comes in. Instead of chasing triggers, I help patients strengthen their nervous system and correct structural issues so they’re less sensitive in the first place.
Functional Nervous System Testing – to measure how well your brain and body are communicating.
Biomechanical Motion X-Rays – to see misalignments in action, not just lying flat in an MRI.
Upper Cervical Corrections – precise adjustments that restore balance at the cranio-cervical junction and improve CSF and vascular flow.
Supportive Nervous System Care – tools from my Migraine Relief Blueprint (cold exposure, breathwork, mineral hydration, sleep optimization, grounding, and movement) to build long-term resilience.
When patients go through this process, something amazing happens: the weather stops controlling their life.
The Bottom Line
If you’ve ever felt like a storm was stalking you, you’re not crazy. Weather changes really do affect migraines. But the trigger isn’t the whole story—the problem is how your nervous system responds.
Fix the dysfunction, and the weather stops being your enemy.
